An astute signing for Arsenal Nacho Monreal

Of the 31 days in January, only one brought a smile on the faces of all Arsenal fans across the globe. As expected the January Transfer Window proved to be a quiet one and, whatever business was concluded was largely done by teams fighting for survival in the English Premier League. Ideally not much was expected from Arsenal, considering manager, Arsene Wenger, has never been a fan of the winter transfer window. When asked about the lack of activity, the Gunners manager said ?Look at what the other top teams have spent. I think it should be completely cut out or limited to two players because it is unfair for the league that some teams have played, for example, Newcastle already and then some teams have to face Newcastle still with six or eight new players. They do not face exactly the same team. I believe the number of players you can buy should be limited,? he finished.

Arsenal did however make one signing during the January Transfer Window albeit because of an injury to Kieran Gibbs. Nacho Monreal joined Arsenal from cash stricken Malaga for a fee believed to be in the region of ?8.3 million. Just days after joining the club, his first assignment couldn?t have been harder, as Arsenal played Stoke City, a team which Wenger described later as a culture shock for Nacho. However, after a month at the club, Nacho has adapted rather well. During his first five games he has amassed a goal, (against Swansea) an assist (for fellow countryman Santi Cazorla against Aston Villa) and during this period Arsenal have kept three clean sheets. His overall contribution on the pitch has been admirable.

Along with Kieran Gibbs, Arsenal has two world class players and there is certainly going to be competition for the left-back role in coming years. One thing is for sure, Arsene Wenger may have only made one signing in the January Transfer Window, but one can only appreciate the quality of this astute signing.
