Arsenal v Panathinaikos - Player Ratings

Last updated : 07 November 2004 By Mike Bohndiek
Key Incidents

Goal (Arsenal) (16) –A soft penalty was awarded after a tug back on Vieira. Up stepped Henry, hoping to eradicate the memory of Saturday, and he did just that with a low shot into the corner.

Penalty Missed (Panithinaikos) (61) - Another soft penalty was awarded by the referee. But clearly inspired by the CSKA Moscow effort earlier in the day, it was blazed high and wide.

Goal (Panithinaikos) (73) - As Panithinaikos broke forward a driven shot took a cruel deflection off the head of Cygan and flicked past the helpless Lehmann.

Player Ratings

Jens Lehmann - 7 Gathered the ball in well and stood strong on crosses. Intercepted a good number of dangerous balls into the box

Ashley Cole - 7 Was penalised for giving away the penalty, but this was a soft decision. Apart from that his forward runs helped get Arsenal on the attack, and his defending was resolute.

Kolo Toure - 7 Again, very strong at the back. Was the main man in defence due to Sol's absence, but showed no sign of difficulty in dealing with this role.

Pascal Cygan - 6 Up until the point of the own goal, he was having one of his better games. Unfortunately the own goal knocked his confidence, and from that point on he looked shaky and reverted to the old Cygan.

Lauren - 7 Stopped numerous attacks from what was a dangerous left side from Panithinaikos.

Robert Pires - 7 A classic Bobby display. With incisive runs and game close on a number of occasions.

Patrick Vieira - 7 Has found his form again. Was excellent at driving us on, and worked hard throughout.

Cesc Fabregas - 8 Some brilliant skill to keep hold of the ball. Worked hard in what was a midfield slog

Freddie Ljungberg - 6 Was not a full potential, but still got some good crosses in and won his fair share of corners. (Shame we don't know how to use them!)

Thierry Henry - 7 Recovered from his Saturday penalty miss to put us ahead. Showed a good pair of heels to his marker on a number of occasion, but his final ball was not of his normal standard.

Dennis Bergkamp - 9 MOTM A great display. Worked hard and never stopped running. Set up many moves and looked a danger all night.

Subs:

Jose Reyes - 6 Got stuck into the game, but missed a glorious chance to put us 2-1 up.

Robin Van Persie - 6 Did not have the same impact that he did against Soton, but looked lively and has the will to win inside him.
