The Gunners defended resolutely, particularly in the first half when Bayern had tons of possession, giving up few quality chances to Bayern.

In the second half Arsenal pressed higher up the field, leaving the back more exposed, and Bayern finally scored, Schweinsteiger left open too long.

Arsenal hit back right away, Podolski getting away with a slight shove on Lahm and then smashing the ball into the net past Neuer.

Arsenal created a number of half chances, but crosses ended up being too close to Neuer or shots where charged down.

Arjen Robben won Bayern a questionable late penalty, but Fabianski saved to keep the Gunners alive.

However Arsenal failed to score and Bayern move on to the next round.

Player Ratings:

Fabianski  7.  Made a good first half save from Goetze and saved the penalty kick. His distribution left a lot to be desired though, too often taking too long and missing his targets.

Sagna  7.  Largely strong game from Bacary. He made a couple of timid back passes in the first half, but defensively he did well considering he had Ribery and Alaba breathing down his neck.

Mertesacker  7.  A pretty strong performance from the BFG. A couple of times he was caught one on one, but he always managed to recover.

Koscielny 8.  A strong game from Laurent. Robben’s penalty dive was a generous gift from the ref, although Laurent did nick Robben a little.

Vermaelen  7.  A good game for Thomas, particularly considering the fact that he had Robben and Lahm to deal with. For the most part he kept them quiet.

Arteta  6.  Heavily marked by the Bayern players who kept him off the ball, particularly in the first half. He committed a number of fouls, several because of his lack of pace.

Oxlade-Chamberlain  9.  Our man of the match. His pace, his drive, was the only factor that threatened Bayern. He put a lot of effort in and although he only had one shot on goal, he stood out.

Ozil  5.  His control was sloppy and he didn’t look up for the game.

Cazorla  7.  Was anonymous in the first half, but he came alive at the end. The referee had no sympathy for Santi when he was jostled off the ball.

Giroud 6.  Ran hard, had a couple of chances, didn’t link up with his teammates in the first half, and looked exhausted at the end. A decent header in the first half didn’t have enough zip on it, and some opportunities late, but he had run out of gas.

Podolski  8.  Was up for the match and scored a stunning goal. Linked up well with his teammates and he had a strong second half, being at the heart of a number of moves.

Substitutes:

Rosicky 7.  He helped to drive the press and to allow us more ball possession. Was not ready to accept the pass that came his way near the end, our best chance to score late in the game.

Gnabry 6.  Two chances for Gnabry, one a poor cross too close to Neuer and the other a shot that blazed way over the bar.

Flamini  n/a.  Was about the only option left on the bench.
