Gunners Icon Tony Adams Admits He Doesnt Support Arsenal Or Any Club

Tony Adams – the Gunners' famed 'Mr Arsenal' – has admitted that he is not a fan of the north London club.

Adams is widely regarded as ‘Mr Arsenal’ by many associated with the north London side. The former England defender spent the full duration of his 22 year career at Highbury, captaining the Gunners to four league titles during his time at the club.

The Arsenal icon may be one of the club’s most decorated players of all time, but Adams has sent a shock message to fans of his former side. The 52-year-old told the Times: “It’s like an ex-girlfriend. 16 years trying to get back with a girl, get the message, mate, move on.

“If it comes to a time when she wants to employ me again, then Hallelujah. We are going New Year’s Day [v Fulham]. The kids all love Arsenal. I was never a fan, so it was different, I worked there. I was never a fan of any club.

“I loved playing it, that was my escape. It was like alcohol. I never liked the taste but I drank it like it was going out of fashion. I loved what football did for me.

“The game’s changed. A lot of fans today go to see their team win when back in the day when I played they used to go to support the team, win or lose, it didn’t matter, that’s your local team and you supported it.”

The former defender is the only player to have captained a title-winning team in three separate decades, with Adams having excelled through the changing of times into the Arsene Wenger era at Highbury.

Though Adams’ connection with the club has waned, Arsenal are going strong under Unai Emery, with the Gunners currently on a 16-game unbeaten run.

Arsenal continue their top four push with a testing trip to face Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium in the Premier League on Sunday, in a fixture which has proved notoriously tough for the Gunners in recent years.
