Is the Arsenal squad lacking steel

Last updated : 12 August 2013 By DSG

When the 2012/13 season started, like most club team supporters, Arsenal fans were anxious to see what their favourite football team had in store. During the summer transfer window Arsene Wenger signed Spaniard Santi Cazorla, German International Lukas Podolski and French striker Olivier Giroud. Devoted Arsenal followers from around the globe would argue, even with the loss of clinical finisher Robin Van Persie, the Gunners looked well armed to shoot for some silverware. Fast forward seven months; the FA and League Cup were off the table, the League title was well out of reach and the idea of a trophy seemed bleak. A hard fought elimination from the Champions league, to eventual winners Bayern Munchen, and Arsenal would remain without a major trophy for an eighth consecutive season. The cold realization that the closest your club would get to a trophy was merely through picture was grim to most, downright depressing for many.

Here we are one year later and it?s less than a week from the start of the British Premier League season. A new football year offers a chance to start fresh, tweak your squad and chase for Championships. Arsenal?s much-maligned French manager has yet to make any major signings and the same concern is upon Gunner fans yet again. Will the squad reward their patience with some hardware after nearly a decade of shooting blanks?

Wenger has made it known he has his wallet and sight focused on Liverpool?s bizarre, bloodthirsty, Uruguayan predator Luis Suarez. Other rumoured transfer targets have included Spanish national forward, David Villa, Cameroon international, Samuel Eto?o and Moroccan Alharbi El Jadeyaoui, just to name a few. With Suarez?s future seemingly tied up at Anfield and the other prospective choices simply appearing as pundit fodder. Where does this leave Arsenal and its fans? Only time and transfers, or lack thereof, will dictate that.

Less than three weeks remain in the transfer window and Emirates faithful stand at attention waiting to see what their Commander has in store. Will the North London club add the right weapon to their armory to push the Gunners to victory and a long awaited trophy? One thing is certain, the fans will only feel at ease when the target of titles and trophies has been hit and rank has been restored.
