Sunderland 1 Arsenal 3: Player Ratings

Last updated : 14 September 2013 By Michael Jung

The first half saw some of the best Arsenal play in years, but produced just one goal. The hard won advantage was squandered early in the second half by a rejuvenated Sunderland and poor defending. However, Arsenal responded and Aaron Ramsey delivered twice to secure victory for the Gunners. Arsenal have now won five in a row

Szczesny 6. Wasn't troubled too often, but was beaten easily by the penalty and was lucky Altidore's effort was disallowed.

Jenkinson 7. His first half header was reminiscent of his pre-season flub against Napoli. However, no goal resulted and he played solidly through the rest of the game. Had a great assist on the second goal.

Sagna 7. Solid game, made some key headers and blocks. Was bullied by Altidore, whose resulting goal was luckily not allowed.

Koscielny 6. A poor challenge on Johnson gave Sunderland a lifeline into the game. There's a rashness in some of his challenges that makes me nervous. Otherwise he had a solid game.

Gibbs 7. Was always available on the left flank. However most of his crosses didn't find their mark. Was involved in the setup for the first goal.

Flamini 8. Tireless performance from our pitbull. He was always there to help, to harry, and to sniff out any danger.

Ramsey 9. Man of the match. Was having a quiet but effective game until he popped up with two excellent goals in the middle of the second half.

Wilshere 7. A pretty good performance from Jack. He still is the continued victim of the opposition's fouls and tackles, but his runs cause defences to quickly panic.

Ozil 8. A fabulous debut for Mesut. He had a wonderful assist on the first goal and was involved in the buildup for the third. Would have had a few more assists if Walcott was on song.

Walcott 7. Theo is getting in the right places and making the right runs, however his finishing lacks confidence. Could easily have had a hat trick today.

Giroud 8. A well taken first goal, a great assist on the third goal, and a good day of battling up front. Hopefully, he isn't injured and can play against Marseille.

Substitutes.

Vermaelen 6. Good to see him finally back. Managed to get a few minutes under his belt.

Monreal n/a. Only on for the last ten minutes.

Akpom n/a. Chuba made his first official appearance for the Arsenal. Just two minutes and he made his first touch just as Martin Atkinson blew his final whistle.
