The real problem with Arsenal - Mentality

Last updated : 08 February 2013 By DSG

From the start of the 2012-13 season,Arsene Wenger has reiterated his beliefs in the squad being well equipped. Yet after 25 games, Arsenal?s dream of landing the English Premier League title has all but vanished as they languish a mammoth 21 points behind league leaders Manchester United. True to his beliefs, the manager made just one addition (Nacho Monreal) in the January transfer window.

After resigning the deal with Emirates and obtaining other commercial revenues, certain sections of supporters have begun questioning the reasons for not spending, considering the surplus funds available at the club. Both camps have expressed their views and due to the contrasting performances have been put right and wrong this season. Inconsistency is the one big problem at Arsenal. While there have been some average performances against Norwich, Aston Villa, Southampton etc. there have been exceptional ones too against Newcastle United, Liverpool, and West Ham United etc.

However, Arsenal?s biggest problem is mentality as at times they either don?t turn up for matches (find themselves fighting back from a losing position) or other times when they happily play down the clock rather than finishing off the opposition. The absence of a leader on the pitch has been evident, since the departure of Patrick Vieira. Arsene Wenger has taken the gamble of not spending this January, the results of which shall only be obtained at the end of the current season.

However, the team are united as ever and, Arsenal?s hopes of winning the FA Cup and reaching the top 4 are still very much alive but a lot depends on which team turns up on the pitch.
