Arsene Wenger told reporters that he wasn't looking for a striker following the Porto game - A bizarre statement from the man who was prepared to spend fifteen million quid on Baptista.

But Wenger's plan was almost certainly to play Baptista in midfield, a position that he was used to prior to arriving at Sevilla.

When quizzed about his rumoured interest in Michael Owen, he said:

"At the moment I am not looking for a striker. I am looking at other areas and we have not made any approach for Michael Owen."

He went on to make these comments when asked if he felt Arsenal were in a better position prior to the start of the new Premiership season:

"We were in a great position going into last term, after coming out of an unbeaten season so we are not in a better position, but we are in a position where our ambition and desire are as big if not bigger this time."
