Wenger switches attention to Mata

The Sunday Mirror yesterday reported that the Arsene Wenger is about to switch his attention to Chelsea?s Juan Mata after the arrival of his new team-mate Willian, which according to the Mirrow will ultimately see him dropping down the pecking order in terms of Chelsea?s starting XI.

Arsenal were favourites to sign Mata from Valencia back in 2011 but as with many attempted transfers the club fell short at the last hurdle as Chelsea beat Arsenal to Mata?s signature with a package significantly greater than what the Gunners were offering.

Mata has been a revelation at Chelsea and their fans will be concerned that these rumours have now started. For Arsenal, their fans will remember how effective they were when they had quality wide players; players such as Marwood, Limpar and Overmars all contributed towards regular silverware for the Gunners and they will relish the prospect of Mata joining, even if rumours are very speculative at this stage.

The fact that Arsenal have managed to win their last two games will not ease the pressure on Arsene Wenger. Arsenal fans will merely see this as papering over the cracks and Arsene knows with the significant money at his disposal he is still under pressure to deliver some quality signings before the close of the transfer window.
