Feature: Our Premiership Record

Last updated : 21 August 2002 By Luke Tovey
Any excuse to use one of these pictures again!
Our bogey team is definitely the scousers! We've only beaten Liverpool twice at home and twice away in the Premiership. Although interestingly, following on from a recent discussion about Tottenham, it was suggested that they we shouldn't want them relegated because we would 'miss beating them'.

It might surprise some of you to know then that our away record against Spurs is as bad as it is against Man Utd, Liverpool and Leeds. We have the worst away records against these teams, beating them away only two times in ten seasons. We've lost four times at WHL. (With Man Utd those two wins have come in Championship seasons)

At home, we've managed only four wins and five draws against the Scum, but more importantly we've only lost once to Spurs at home in 10 years, although again it slightly dispels the myth that we always beat them; more reinforces the fact that regardless of form the North London derby is generally a tight low scoring affair.

Our best away record of all the teams that have spent 10 years in the premiership is against Everton, we've beaten them 5 times out of 10 at Goodison and 8 times out of 10 at home, drawing 1 and losing 1. (Although we've also beaten So'ton away 5 times, but we've lost down at the old Dell three times in the Premiership, and one of those away wins has come at St.Mary's)

Our best away record on percentage in Middlesbrough with a 71.43% success rate, although they've only been in the Premiership for 7 seasons.

Here's a list of teams that have spent eight or more years in the Premiership and our record against them .. out of interest ..

West Ham Utd (In the Premiership for 9 seasons)

Home W-7 D-0 L-2
Away W-5 D-3 L-1

(Not a bad record bearing in mind our trip to Upton Park this weekend)

Chelsea ( ..... 10 Seasons)

Home W-7 D-3 L-0
Away W-4 D-3 L-3

Leeds Utd ( ..... 10 Seasons)

Home W-7 D-1 L-2
Away W-2 D-3 L-5

Everton ( ..... 10 Seasons)

Home W-8 D-1 L-1
Away W-5 D-4 L-1

Newcastle Utd ( ..... 8 Seasons)

Home W-5 D-1 L-3
Away W-3 D-2 L-4

Scum ( ..... 10 Seasons)

Home W-3 D-5 L-1
Away W-2 D-4 L-4

Southampton ( ..... 10 Seasons)

Home W-7 D-3 L-0
Away W-5 D-2 L-3

Aston Villa ( ..... 10 Seasons)

Home W-5 D-3 L-2
Away W-3 D-4 L-3

'The FA Plc' aka Man Utd ( ..... 10 Seasons)

Home W-5 D-2 L-3
Away W-2 D-3 L-5

Liverpool ( ...... 10 Seasons)

Home W-2 D-3 L-5
Away W-2 D-2 L-6

Blackburn Rovers ( ..... 8 Seasons)

Home W-2 D-4 L-2
Away W-4 D-2 L-2

In terms of percentage, Blackburn are second only to Liverpool for teams we have a bad home record against. We only, in Premiership history, win 25% of home matches against Blackburn, also Blackburn are one of the few teams we have a better record 'away' than we do at 'home'.

I hope that's bored you enough!
