He went on to say: "It is as good a result in Europe as I have had in my time at Arsenal. Thierry was exceptional tonight. He scored three different goals, but three great goals.

"I would not change any of my players as I believe in them all. While Thierry was exceptional, we have now won in Auxerre, Eindhoven and Rome so we could not do that with Thierry Henry alone."

"We are in a strong position as it is important to get points away from home and every game in this group is a massive cup tie.

"It was an outstanding team performance, we defended very well, kept the ball well and our midfield got stronger and stronger.

"Pascal also saved a goal with an important save on the line and I thought the referee was quite good, especially as he didn't give all the penalties that Roma wanted!

"We had a difficult start in going 1-0 down very quickly, but came back in a great way and I felt Roma were cautious after that - and they did not want to be caught on the break.

"In the second half we were always dominant, but we needed to be patient and we waited for our opening until the right moment came."
