AST is one of more than 160 trusts throughout Britain promoting mutual ownership of football clubs throughout the land.

Commenting AST director Glyn Taylor said, "Mutual ownership of clubs by their supporters will grow in this country. I'm certain of it. There's a tendency for people to think supporter ownership is only for smaller clubs. Well I suppose that's true if you class Barcelona and Real Madrid as small clubs.

"We want to work with the board at Arsenal to make our club the best in the world on and off the pitch, the way the club is run and governed. Supporter ownership provides 'ballast' securing the club for the supporters and its community. A growing level of supporter ownership makes opportunistic takeovers difficult. It also gives supporters a real voice.

"Over time we want to build up a sufficient stake in the club to have a supporter-director. We've been very pleased with the positive response by the club board and management to the establishment of the trust so far. We look forward to working with them to build Arsenal into a model that others will want to follow."
