A fascinating game awaits North London?s two giants this weekend. The game has always brought on the best in football banter between the two sets of fans and the Emirates leg of the derby has thrown up some amazing results recently. Arsenal currently lead the way over the rivals with a victory count of 62 to 49 in the league and whilst the Gunners are normally confident at home their fans are still haunted by the way Spurs managed to ?steal? a 4-4 draw after twice clawing back a two goal deficit in the 2008-2009 season and worst still was the 3-2 victory two years later when Kaboul scored in the last 5 minutes to cap an amazing comeback and confirm Spurs? first win at Arsenal in 17 years. Arsenal fans will also remember the needless handball in that game given away by Cesc Fabregas which set Spurs up for the win.
If Arsenal fans will be nervous, Spurs fans will be doubly nervous. The last two seasons has seen Spurs surrender very strong positions after taking the lead twice by 2 goals to nil only to end up losing by a humiliating 5-2 score line. Will Arsenal make it an unlikely hatrick this weekend?
It seems unlikely but you never know.
Spurs have been mega busy in the transfer window signing 5 players for upwards of ?70M. They have also trimmed their squad by releasing 11 other players, four of whom were sold recouping over ?20M. Spurs will still be cash rich as no-one expects Bale to remain at the club after it has spent so much money. Arsenal in contrast have spent the grand sum of nil pounds and yesterday announced their signature signing of the summer with Matthieu Flamini returning back to the club for a second spell.
I am relishing the prospect of the latest North London Derby. Who knows what the score will be. Form wise, Arsenal have recovered their form in time and will be quietly confident of making it win number 63. Spurs on the other hand, will be wondering, if they do not finish above Arsenal this season they will wonder if this will ever be possible, as their squad is exceptionally strong this year. The pressure will be on AvB to deliver a higher place League finish than the Gunners and also to get back into the Champions League.
