With these two the stories could not be more different. Tony Fernandes week after week came out backing Mark Hughes ? however with the 3-1 home defeat to fellow struggles Southampton, Hughes was told to pack his bags and leave the London club. They currently sit 7 points off safety in the Premier League.
Roberto Di Matteo however was quite different. Adored by Chelsea fans & players, and even respected by neutrals off the game. Di Matteo was given the sack after a difficult period where Chelsea lost top spot in the Premier League after a blistering start ? and now look increasingly unlikely to progress to the latter stages of the Champions League. They look soon to be holding the infamous record of being the only team to not qualify for the knockout stages of the tournament after winning it the season before.
There are four candidates I believe could well be on the receiving end of a cold, brutal sacking this season, here they are and why.
Martin O'Neill ? Sunderland Football Club.
After the honeymoon period when O'Neill took over from Steve Bruce, Sunderland looked relegation in the eye before shooting up the Premier League table and finishing 13th.
However, Sunderland currently lie 17th this season and just one point off the relegation zone. Two wins and seven draws from 12 games have seen O'Neill's side fail to kill off games they so desperately needed to win.
Along with spending money on two big summer signings in Steven Fletcher and Adam Johnson. Pressure may be building on Martin O'Neill.
Nigel Adkins ? Southampton Football Club.
Although Adkins appears to have turned a corner with Southampton with impressive victories over Newcastle and Queens Park Rangers ? fans should still realise that Southampton are in fact still in the relegation zone.
The Southampton fans seem content with Adkins at the moment ? and as long as he continues the revival at St Marys he should steer clear of a sacking, but hey, this is football.
Southampton are one pint away from the safety ? although still boasting the worst defensive record in the league. If Adkins can sort out this conundrum, his job may be safe.
Brian McDermott ? Reading Football Club.
Brian McDermott at times this season has seen his side achieve the impossible ? all to throw it away. A 13 goal thriller against Arsenal and a first half 7 goal fest against Manchester United has shown that Reading are capable of playing with the big dogs.
Defensive fratilities have been a thorn in Reading's side this season, and if McDermott cant sort it out quickly, he may be the next manager in line to leave the Premier League.
Arsene Wenger ? Arsenal Football Club.
This is a tricky one.
After the worst start under Arsene Wenger, Arsenal find themselves 10th in the Barclays Premier League. The sale of key players is hurting Arsenal, and their reluctancy to spend big money on replacements has seen their transition from a Premier League challenging side to a mid-table mediocrity.
Every Gooner will be desperate for a change in Arsenal Football Club. Whether thats the board, the chairman, or even the manager himself.
I doubt Arsene Wenger would ever be sacked by Arsenal ? but I wouldn't be surprised if he decided to walk out on the club. After 16 long years in London ?
