'Put that fag out!' - Highbury smoking ban now in force

Last updated : 24 January 2005 By Chris Parry
Without wishing to dredge up the old (and unproven) 'passive smoking will kill you' argument, for me it's a sad day when you can't have a smoke while watching the football.

What is even more peculiar (as Bernard points out in his diary) is that whilst you are not permitted to smoke in the open air whilst watching the match, you are allowed to smoke within the confines of the concourses! - One would have thought it would have been the other way around.

As from the next match at Highbury (against Wolves on January 29), a new non-smoking policy will come into effect at the stadium.

The terms of the policy are:

Smoking is banned during the game, if you want to smoke whilst the match is taking place you can only do so in public areas and concourses

Should someone around you not be adhering to this procedure, please bring it to a stewards attention either at half time or at the end of the match.

Smoking will not be permitted in any restaurant areas including the South Stand , Executive Suite and Bondholders' restaurant.

It is also worth noting at this juncture that this policy will be extended to Emirates Stadium where there will be a no pipes/no cigars policy as well as Club Level being a strictly no smoking area. It is our intention to continually monitor and review this policy in line with social trends and government legislation.
