The way I see it - Arsenal v Blackburn Rovers

And, unless you are looking for a cure for insomnia I don't think that a video of last Saturday's game at the Riverside will be high on the must have list of any Arsenal fan.

As contests go it wasn't the best was it? The Arsenal certainly toiled and laboured for long periods of the game against a resolute Boro side but just when it looked like the Arsenal were never going to find a way through, a couple of lucky ricochets in the 74th. minute of the game gave Robert Pires the sort of opportunity that he doesn't tend to miss.

It was a strike that was, of course, good enough to earn us a victory, a victory that was as ugly as you get but, when you consider what happened at Carrow Road a few hours later…..well, when it comes to qualifying for next season's Champions League as of right, you just wonder how vital Pires' opportunism at Riverside could prove to be.

I watched the first half of the game at Carrow Road live on TV at home and at half time with the score goalless I'm sure that I wasn't the only neutral thinking that Old Purple Nose would pull out the old hairdryer and bring on the likes of Rooney and Cruud Van Horseface in order to get the job done.

My conviction was such that I didn't bother to watch the second half and instead I retired to the bedroom to play on my Play Station. An hour and a half later though, curiosity got the better of me and I switched on the Teletext to see what happened and there it was - Norwich had only gone and won 2-0!!

I was roaring so loud with delight and laughing so hysterically that the missus, who was listening to some music in the living room at the time, rushed into the bedroom to see what the hell was going on. I told her to look at the screen and she gave me a knowing look, sighed and then walked back out again.

The events at the Riverside certainly made up for my rotten luck in last Saturday's Grand National. All week I had saying to my mates to put their money on Hedgehunter to win though I also had a strong fancy for Clan Royal.

I told the missus to pick a couple of horses for the race herself and with absolutely no prompting from me she initially chose Hedgehunter and Royal Auclair. She then changed her mind (as women do) and went for Hedgehunter and Joly Bey instead.

By the time I had got down to the bookies I decided to go for Clan Royal rather than Hedgehunter (don't ask me why) and as well as the placing a bet for the missus on the two she decided on, I put a couple of quid each way on Royal Auclair for her anyway. What happened? Clan Royal got bloody run out by a loose horse when in command of the race and the missus went on to pick the bloody first and second! I never heard the end of that for the rest of the weekend and even now I can't believe it!!

Deep down I was happy for the missus though. The sight of her jumping up and down clapping with excitement when Hedgehunter jumped the last was great to see because she has never really got to grips with what a buzz jump racing can be. Maybe I will convert her yet.

I was also very happy for Liverpool this week too. Okay they were a touch fortunate in my opinion to bump into probably the most toothless Juventus side I can ever remember watching but you have to give them credit for the level of discipline that they showed in keeping Juve at arms length so comfortably.

The likes of Bob Paisley and Bill Shankly would have been looking down from above with broad grins on their faces I have no doubt and from my point of view it's great to see a truly great English club with a genuine heritage in with a chance of going all the way. I hope that they beat the Phoney Russian Franchise I really do because assuming that Milan will see off PSV in the other semi final a Liverpool v AC Milan final just seems to have a far better ring to it than any alternative.

Still, the Arsenal have a semi-final of their own to attend to, don't they? So let's have a look at Saturday's trip to Cardiff and our little meeting with Blackburn.

There has been a lot of controversy over the fact that the semis are both being played at Cardiff and I do agree that playing these games at the same venue as the final is a somewhat flawed concept but then fans cannot have it both ways.

United fans have been particularly vociferous in their opposition to the semis being played in Cardiff and their supporters groups have said that the game should have been played at Elland Road. Mind you, these were the same groups that were bellyaching over their allocation of tickets for the semi-final tickets last season when they played us at Villa Park. Taking that into account, why were the United fans so keen this year to have their semi moved to Elland Road, a ground that has a slightly SMALLER capacity than Villa Park? I suppose you just can't win with some people can you?

Ah, but I am digressing. Looking towards Saturday, the big dilemma for Wenger is whether to put Campbell back in. Well, I have always said that you can never have too much experience on your side going into big games and I think that he should play. It would be unfortunate for either Toure or Senderos to miss out but if I had a choice then I would go for Senderos on this occasion purely because I said that he needed to have a run in the team a few weeks back and I still believe that to be true now.

Whilst the pressure (as usual) will be on us the fact is that if this game is going to be a good one then the onus will be very much on Blackburn to make it so. After all, it's not exactly our way to adopt a negative approach, is it?

Having said that semi-finals of a cup competition are not about putting on a show to please the masses and if the Arsenal end up winning in the last minute courtesy of an own goal or a ricochet off someone's backside that would suit me just fine.
